SPOKANE, Wash. – A set piece from 10 yards outside the box resulted in Whitworth's Katie Bischoff rocketing a shot to score the golden goal for a 1-0 win against Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference women's soccer game on Sunday at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Loggers (10-2-2, 7-1-2 NWC) started the game with heavy offensive pressure that led to outshooting the Pirates (6-8. 5-5 NWC) 6-2 in the first half. Whitworth's Rachel Roegiers had a key defensive save in the 15th minute as the Pirates' defense held off the Puget Sound attack to keep the game tied at 0-0 heading in to halftime.
Whitworth mirrored the Loggers' start to the game with four corner kicks and three shots within the first 10 minutes of the second half. After 90 minutes, Puget Sound had 15 total shots (five on goal) and Whitworth had seven total shots (two on goal).
The Pirates started overtime with two shots on goal in the first two minutes. In the 95th minute, a Puget Sound foul just outside the box set Katie Bischoff up for a free kick. She took the shot and sent it past Puget Sound goalkeeper Lauren Thomas to win the game for Whitworth.
Sienna Tanner (6-5) had four saves for the Pirates in her third shutout of the season. Thomas had four saves and gave up one goal to drop to 10-2-2.
Pacific Lutheran (8-0-2) stands alone atop the Northwest Conference after their 2-2 draw at Whitman. Puget Sound is eight points ahead of Whitworth with 23 points.
Next Up: The Whitworth women's soccer team will go on the road for the first time in three weeks to face Whitman on Wednesday and Willamette on Sunday.
