Whitworth women play to scoreless draw with Pacific

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's soccer team closed its first weekend of Northwest Conference action with a 0-0 draw against visiting Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday at Whitworth Soccer Field.

The Pirates (0-2-3, 0-1-1 NWC) had a strong attack with a 14-5 advantage in shots, but the Boxers (1-3-3, 0-1-3 NWC) held on to prevent their sixth straight loss to Whitworth.

After a defensive first half that held just six total shots, the Pirates applied offensive pressure in the second with 10 shots to Pacific's three. Maia Santa Monica started the second frame and had an immediate impact with two shots, one on goal, in the first six minutes. Santa Monica led the team with three shots in just 32 minutes of action.

With under five minutes to play, the Bucs fired three shots toward the net, including a hard shot from Rebekah Hines at the top of the box, but couldn't break the tie. Pacific's threat was limited to 15% of possession time in its attacking quarter of the field. Despite the nine-shot advantage for Whitworth, Kylie Pascual made five saves to lead the Boxers' shutout effort.

Karlee Roderick made three saves in net for the Pirates. Emma Ellerd, Katherine Kent, Hines and Santa Monica each had a shot on goal to lead the Whitworth attack.

The Bucs will head to Whitman on Tuesday before a trip to Linfield on Sunday looking to earn their first win of the season.
