Box Score 2 GEORGETOWN, Texas – A day after winning twice in the season-opening weekend, the Whitworth volleyball team lost twice on Saturday at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Invitational. The Pirates fell to Texas-Dallas in three sets and to Southwestern University in three sets and are now 2-2 this season.
Nicole Leonard had two kills on the day for the Bucs, who had no emotional energy left after two heart-stopping comeback victories on Friday.
Whitworth will play Lewis-Clark State College on Wednesday night in its home-opening match of 2015.
Match 1: UT Dallas def. Whitworth 25-23, 25-22, 25-19
Leonard led all players with 15 kills, while Cassie Mendoza added nine. But it wasn't enough for the Pirates to overcome the Comets (4-1)
Michelle Toro had 11 kills and was in on six blocks for UT-Dallas. Abbie Barth, the Comets' libero, had a match-high 31 digs.
Shawna Korshavn added seven kills for the Pirates, while Maddye Dinsmore dished 37 assists.
Match 2: Southwestern def. Whitworth 25-10, 25-22, 25-16
Southwestern, also known as the Pirates, secured its spot as the only unbeaten team in the UMHB Invite with its straight-sets win over Whitworth.
Kaitliyn Foster had 11 kills and Piper Sisemore added 10 kills for Southwestern (5-0).
Whitworth struggled offensively throughout the match, hitting only .058 as a team. No Pirate reached double figures in kills. Lauren Budde, a first-year right side hitter, led the Bucs with six kills off of the bnech.
