Women's tennis sweeps UPS to close regular season

TACOMA, Wash. – The visiting Whitworth Pirates wrapped the regular season with a 7-0 sweep of Puget Sound in Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Sunday morning.

The Pirates finished 10-9 overall and 7-7 in the NWC, while the Loggers closed their season with a 3-12 overall record and 3-11 mark in conference play.

The doubles point went to the Pirates in dominant fashion. Gracie Smyley and Faith Kert defeated the top UPS pair 6-1 before a 6-2 win from Clara Todd and Jordan Turner-Esposito. Olivia Corbett and Audrey Judson closed doubles with a 6-0 sweep in the No. 3 position.

Whitworth took each doubles match in two sets. Smyley earned her 13th win of the season and 11th in the No. 1 position. Kert continued her standout freshman regular season with her 11th match win in the No. 2 position. Oliver battled to a first set tiebreaking win (7-6 (7-2)) before a dominant 6-0 second set win. Turner-Esposito and Judson each handled their opponents while Corbett earned her third straight singles win.

The Whitworth women will await the results of the Whitman vs. Lewis & Clark match to determine who earned the fourth NWC Tournament spot. The Pirates need a Lewis & Clark loss to enter a tiebreaker with the Pioneers.
