ORLANDO, Fla. – Whitworth women's tennis pulled off its third straight win over St. Olaf 5-4 to wrap up the week at the UTSA campus in Orlando.
The Pirates (9-6, 4-2 NWC) responded from a 9-0 loss to Union on Monday by rattling off wins on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. St. Olaf (8-2) came into the week undefeated but will return to conference play licking the wounds of back-to-back losses against Union and Whitworth.
Paige Oliver and Olivia Corbett accounted for the Pirates' lone win in doubles, eeking past #2 Alexandra Berns and Jane Spading 8-7 (7-3). All three matches in doubles were decided in the final tie breaker set, as #1 Smyley and Todd lost 8-7 (7-2) and #3 McArthur and Turner-Esposito fell 8-7 (7-3).
In singles, #3 Turner-Esposito topped Spading again in two sets before Paige did the same to Berns winning 6-1, 6-3. With the match tied at three apiece, #1 Smyley took care of business against Olha Zubarieva 6-3, 6-4 and #6 Meredith Bedford followed that up with the clincher over Elliana Loesch 6-3, 6-3.
Whitworth will be in action next on April 6 against George Fox for their regular season conference finale at the Scotford Tennis Center.
