ORLANDO, Fla. – Whitworth women's tennis won its second straight match in Orlando in convincing fashion taking the first six sets in a 7-2 win over Kalamazoo on Wednesday.
The Pirates (8-6, 4-2 NWC) have strung together back-to-back wins now, and will head into tomorrow's match with a chance to beat St. Olaf (8-1) and leave Florida on a hot streak. Kalamazoo (5-6) lost it's third straight match this week.
Whitworth took control with a sweep in doubles. Gracie Smyley and Clara Todd knocked off the Hornets #1 duo of Maddie Hurley and Juliana Pullen 8-2, #2 Audrey Judson and Paige Oliver won 8-4 before Meredith Bedford and Jordan Turner-Esposito won 8-4 to clinch the sweep.
In singles, #3 Natalie Budge got things rolling with a win over Eleni Bougioukou 6-0, 6-3 before Todd clinched the Pirates win by beating #5 Olivia Wolfe 6-3, 6-0. Turner-Esposito won a tight one over Molly Stevison 6-3, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) before Libertad Sarmiento finished the day by beating Kimbouris Soussana 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
No. 1 Smyley lost her match in three sets to Juliana Pullen 6-4, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) and Oliver lost to #2 Hurley 6-2, 6-4.
Whitworth will look to wrap up their trip to the sunshine state in style tomorrow against the Oles.
