SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting Puget Sound rallied for an 11-9 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference women's lacrosse contest on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
The Loggers (1-2 overall, 1-2 NWC) picked up their first win of the season while the Pirates (3-3, 2-2) dropped their second straight decision.
Whitworth scored first on Megan Whitman's goal just over two minutes into the match on a nice pass from Grace Curley. Cat Schilli evened the game 90 seconds later with a player-up goal on a free position shot. Both team scored in the final minute of the first quarter on free position goals. Abby Stranahan for UPS with 21 seconds left and Whitman for Whitworth with four seconds to go, retying the game.
With the scored tied 3-3 midway through the second period, the Pirates appeared to take control with three consecutive goals. Whitman tallied her third of the match on an assist from Nikki Beers. Kenzie Hemman scored two straight, including a free position goal, for a 6-3 lead. However, Schilli tallied in the final minute of the half to get UPS within 6-4, starting a run of five straight Logger goals.
UPS scored the first four goals of the third quarter to go ahead 8-6. Stranahan had the first two and Schilli scored the fourth. The Pirates got within 8-7 at the end of the third on Curley's first goal of the game on a free position attempt.
Anna Chase tied the contest in the first minute of the fourth quarter, scoring on an assist from Sierra Witte. However, UPS scored the next three to put the game away. Stranahan had the first two and Emily Lariviere's goal with 1:21 to play put the match out of reach. Rebecca Irwin scored unassisted in the final minute for Whitworth's last goal.
Stranahan finished with five goals and one assist for UPS, raising her season goal total to 11.
Whitman led the Pirates with three goals and she now has ten this season. Hemman increased her team-leading total to 13 with two, and added seven ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Phoebe Crowther played the second half in goal for the Loggers and made 11 saves in 14 shots on-goal to get the win. Sage Fosnock had four saves in the match for Whitworth.
Whitworth will host Allegheny (Pa.) in a non-conference match on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
