SPOKANE, Wash. – Allegheny College gave Whitworth a taste of high-level NCAA Division III women's lacrosse on Tuesday afternoon as the visiting Gators from Pennsylvania defeated the Pirates 23-6 in a non-conference match in the Pine Bowl.
Senna Perelman tied a school record with seven goals and five assists to total 12 points in one match for Allegheny (3-0), as the Gators outscored Whitworth (3-4) 13-1 over the final 39 minutes of the match.
The Pirates hung with the visitors for much of the first quarter. Megan Whitman, Kenzie Hemman and Grace Curley all scored first period goals that kept the match tied over the first eight minutes. But Allegheny scored the final five goals of the period to lead 8-3 after one quarter. Perelman scored two of those final five, and assisted on another.
Caitlin Smith tallied the first goal of the second quarter to get the Pirates within 8-4, and Rebecca Irwin scored three minutes later to make it 10-5 with 9:34 to play in the half. Whitworth would only score one more goal in the match as the Gators took over. Allegheny led 14-5 at halftime.
The visitors outscored the Pirates 5-0 in the third period. Grace Baginski scored three of those goals and Perelman had the other two.
The run continued into the fourth as Allegheny's lead reached 22-5 before Whitman earned her second goal of the match for the Bucs. Lauren Petrarca added six goals and an assist for the Gators.
Allegheny outshot Whitworth 39-11 and forced 20 Pirate turnovers while committing only six. The Gators had a 22-7 edge in ground balls, but Whitworth held almost even (17-16) in draw controls.
The Pirates will host Willamette and George Fox this weekend in the final home contests of the season.
