Alex Murphy joined the Whitworth football staff in 2023 as the Special Teams Coordinator & Inside Linebackers Coach following a two year stint at Missouri Valley Conference member Missouri State University, most recently as the Director of On-Campus Recruiting / High School Relations.
In his first season at Whitworth, place kicker Iden Bone earned first team All-Northwest Conference recognition as a first-year Pirate.
Prior to coming to Spokane, Murphy served the Missouri State football program in a variety of roles. Beginning as a Defensive Graduate Assistant working with the Defensive Line in 2021, then moving to the Linebacker Position for the 2022 season. Murphy was promoted to Director of On-Campus Recruiting shortly after the promotion of their current Head Coach Ryan Beard, upon the departure of Bobby Petrino to UNLV. While at MO State, Murphy helped the program finish second in the MVFC in 2021, as well as the school’s first home playoff berth since 1990. Murphy also assisted in coaching Eric Johnson, a 2022 NFL Draft Pick to the Indianapolis Colts, as well as eight defensive All-Conference Selections over two seasons.
Prior to his time in Springfield, Murphy served as the Special Teams Coordinator / Linebackers Coach at USA South member Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina. During his time there, Murphy’s crew led the conference in FG percentage, and third in Kickoff Return average, and also had one first team special teams All-Conference selection in the spring season of 2021.
Before Greensboro, Murphy spent time in Athens, West Virginia as the Outside Linebackers Coach at Concord University.
Murphy briefly spent time at Sun Belt member Appalachian State University as a football operations intern after serving as a Student Assistant for Western Carolina University for three seasons. Murphy began as a video assistant before working his way into a student coaching role, where he assisted with the Tight End position and special teams units.
Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Western Carolina in 2018, and his Master’s degree from Concord University in 2020. A native of Mount Airy, North Carolina, Murphy currently resides in Spokane.
