Marshia Dashiell, Women’s Basketball
(1968)
Arguably the best women’s basketball player to play at
Whitworth over a 30-year period (through the fifties, sixties and
seventies), Marshia Dashiell established a basketball career that
spanned four decades. Her career scoring average of 15.8
points per game remains the third highest career average in Pirate
women’s basketball history. As a junior she averaged
17.1 points per game and led the Pirates to a 10-1 record, with
wins over University of Washington, Washington State and
Gonzaga. She scored a career-high 32 points vs. Gonzaga as a
sophomore, the third highest single-game mark in school
history. After her Whitworth career concluded, Dashiell
continued to play on touring and AAU teams. In 1975 she was
invited to try out for the first-ever United States Olympic
team. She continued to travel with touring basketball teams
throughout the seventies and early eighties, traveling to Central
America and Europe. She returned to competitive basketball as
a player/coach from 1993 until 1996. Dashiell retired after
teaching and coaching for 30 years in Oregon, including eight years
at Cascade High School in Turner and 18 years in the North
Clackamas School District.
Bob Bradner, Football (1956)
Bob Bradner was instrumental in helping usher in the first great
era of Whitworth College football, under head coach Jim
Lounsberry. During Bradner’s career the Pirates won 27
games, lost five and tied twice. The 1953 (7-1), 1954 (8-0)
and 1955 (9-0) teams all won Evergreen Conference titles, the first
conference titles in school history. As a junior he caught 15
passes for 450 yards and five touchdowns. He was named First
Team All-Evergreen Conference, First Team Little All-Northwest and
Second Team Little All-West Coast. As a senior he caught 26
passes for 390 yards and eight touchdowns. He was again named
First Team All-Evergreen Conference and All-Little Northwest.
In addition he was named as a First Team NAIA All-American.
Upon graduating from Whitworth in 1956 with a B.A. in business,
Bradner worked for 41 years with Standard Oil Company in
California, retiring in 1997 as a senior manager in
finance.
Tommy Stewart, Basketball / Track & Field
(1985)
One of the greatest all-around athletes in Whitworth College
history, Tommy Stewart was a standout basketball player and track
and field athlete. As a basketball player he led the Pirates
to a pair of Northwest Conference titles (1983 and 1984). As
a senior he averaged 22.6 points per game and was named First Team
NAIA All-District I and NAIA Honorable Mention All-American.
In track and field he set one individual record and one relay
record for Whitworth that still stand today. He was NAIA
champion in the triple jump in 1983, jumping 50’
3½”. The following year he finished as NAIA
runner-up in the triple jump, even though his mark of
50’6” was longer than the year before. That same
year he established Whitworth and NAIA District I records by
winning the triple jump at the District championships with a mark
of 50’ 7½”. The Whitworth record has never
been broken. Stewart was also a part of two NAIA All-American
relay teams. He teamed with Scott Miller, Don Latimer and Tim
Wright to place fourth in the 4x100 relay two straight years at the
NAIA Championships. In 1983 they set a school record of 41.16
that continues to stand. The Seattle Supersonics signed
Stewart to a free agent try-out contract after his senior
season. He went on to play professionally in Europe for
Basket Club Perrier in Nimes, France for one season. He is
currently living in Southern California and is Vice President of
Sales for Nortel Networks.
