Fleck drives in eight to power Whitworth past CMS

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Emerson Fleck drove in eight runs on two home runs and a double to lead visiting Whitworth to a 19-6 seven-inning win over 13th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the finale of a four-game non-conference baseball series on Sunday at Azusa Pacific University.

The Pirates improved to 7-11 and avoided a four-game sweep at the hands of the Stags, who fell to 9-4.  Whitworth will return to Northwest Conference play at home next weekend when the Pirates host Lewis & Clark College in the first home series of the 2026 season.

Fleck's three-run home run in the first gave the Bucs a quick 3-0 lead.  CMS got three back in the bottom half of the first after loading the bases with no one out.  A walk, hit batter and sacrifice fly drove in the three runs.

It was the Pirates' turn to take advantage of free passes when they scored eight runs on only three hits in the top of the fourth.  The Stags used four pitchers in the inning who issued seven walks and hit two batters.  Tommy Lamb had an RBI single in the inning and Fleck picked up his fourth RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

In the top of the fifth Fleck followed Kyle Memarian's two-run home run with a solo shot of his own to increase the lead to 14-3.  Whitworth loaded the bases again in the top of the sixth before Carson Coffield drove in one run with a single.  Fleck followed with a three-run double to post eight RBIs in the game.  Fleck eventually scored the Pirates' final run on a wild pitch.

Josh Jacobs hit a two-run home run for the Stags in the bottom of the sixth and they added one more in the seventh, but not enough to prevent the contest from ending on a ten-run rule in seven frames.

Fleck finished the game 3 for 4 with four runs scored.  Memarian was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and three runs.  Whitworth scored 19 runs on only 12 hits thanks to eight walks and two hit batters.

Owen Schneider (1-0) came on in relief for Whitworth with one out and the bases loaded in the first inning.  He went 2.2 innings without allowing a run and only giving up one hit.  Seth Mahler (S, 2) threw the final four innings and allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

CMS used seven pitchers in the game.  Each gave up at least one run.
