Pirates hit three home runs to complete sweep

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University drilled three three-run home runs on the way to a 20-10 ten-run rule win over visiting Pacific University at Merkel Field on Sunday afternoon, completing a Northwest Conference baseball series sweep of the Boxers.

The Pirates scored 58 runs over the three games to improve to 15-11 overall and 10-1 in the NWC.  They have won nine games in a row.

Whitworth jumped out to a 5-0 lead through two innings, getting a three-run home run from Caleb Gray in the second.  It was Gray's team-leading sixth home run of the season.

Pacific (6-18, 3-9) put together a six-run rally in the top of the third, stringing six hits around two hit batters.  None of the hits drove in more than one run.  Max Finkelstien's single gave the Boxers a short-lived 6-5 lead.

Whitworth answered with six runs of their own in the bottom of the third.  Austin Paul drilled a three-run shot down the right field line and Gray delivered a two-run single.

The Pirates put the game away with six more runs in the fourth.  Spencer Shipman's three-run home run to left drove in half.  Nate Gray Jr. added a two-run triple later in the inning, sending Whitworth to a 17-6 lead through four innings.

Pacific got within 17-10 in the sixth after a two-run home run by Trevor Kazahaya in the fifth and a solo shot by Zander Ditona in the sixth.

The Bucs got two back in the bottom of the sixth.  The game ended on Carson Coffield's double to left in the seventh that scored Kyle Memarian and put the Pirates up by 10 runs.

Caleb Gray ended the game 3 for 5 with five RBIs, while Shipman finished 4 for 6 with four RBIs and three runs scored.  Paul's home run gave him 12 RBIs for the weekend.  Coffield increased his NWC-leading RBI total to 31.

Ben Lewis led the Boxers at the plate, finishing 2 for 4 with three RBIs.

Nathaniel Kurano (4-2) started on the mound for the Bucs and got the win despite allowing eight runs on 11 hits in 5.0 innings.  Owen Schneider (two runs allowed) tossed the final two innings for Whitworth.

Isiah Hirsch (1-1) started for Pacific and gave up five runs on five hits and four walks in 1.2 innings.  Four Boxers followed in relief, each giving up at least one run.

The Pirates will take their winning streak into a three-game series at Willamette on April 3-4.
