LA GRANDE, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth pulled away from a 5-5 tie after one quarter with a dominating second period on the way to a 21-7 win at Eastern Oregon University in a non-conference women's lacrosse match on Saturday afternoon at Community Stadium.
Campbell Vincent scored seven goals for the Pirates, who improved to 2-3 this season. Whitworth will return to action on Thursday at home against Kalamazoo (Mich.).
EOU (0-7) traded goals with the Bucs through the first period and took a pair of leads at 4-3 and 5-4. Vincent tied the match 5-5 with only 16 seconds left in the opening quarter. Whitworth broke open the match by outscoring the Mountaineers 8-1 in the second quarter for a 13-6 lead at halftime. Vincent scored four straight goals for the Pirates to increase their lead from 7-5 to 11-5 with 6:18 to play in the first half.
Whitworth's defense was particularly strong down the stretch, limiting EOU to only five shots and a single goal after halftime. The Pirates earned advantages of 38-20 in total shots and 25-8 in shots on-goal. Whitworth won 21 of the 29 draw controls and 19 of the 29 ground balls.
Vincent added one assist for a total of eight points. Her season-high goal total is only one goal away from her Pirate single-game record of eight goals she set last season in a victory at Pacific Lutheran.
Rose Frezza added four goals and one assist, while Kenison Turner scored three. Both are season-high totals. Sierra Witte and Peyton Green tallied two goals and two assists apiece.
Charlotte Norton played the first quarter in net for the Bucs and allowed five goals with only one save. Kayla Jones played the final 45 minutes and allowed only two goals with three saves.
