Men's tennis opens NWC second half at Whitman

SPOKANE, Wash. –  Whitworth men's tennis opens the second half of Northwest Conference play this weekend with a stand-alone rematch at Whitman College on Saturday. First serve is set for 2:00 pm.

The Pirates: The Bucs (6-2 overall, 6-1 NWC) earned their third straight weekend sweep and sixth straight win last weekend.

On Saturday, Whitworth beat Puget Sound 5-2. The Loggers earned the doubles point, but the Pirates bounced back with five singles wins. Matt Hossack won his fifth straight match and Connor Judson continued his impressive season with a sixth straight win. Landon LaBrie dominated in his first conference action from the No. 6 court (6-2, 6-0) and Henry Preacher capped the match with a hard fought three-set win.

The Bucs won their 16th consecutive match over Willamette on Sunday by a score of 6-1. Matt Froslan and Hossack secured the doubles point with a win from the No. 2 court to kick off the match. Easton Weir got his first NWC win with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 5 position. Ryan Ashley took home his fourth straight match win and Preacher earned his second three-set win of the weekend. Judson finished the first half of NWC play with a perfect 7-0 singles record.

The Opponents: Whitman hosts Whitworth following an unbeaten 7-0 run (7-1 overall) through the first half of the conference schedule. Of the Blues' seven wins, four have been sweeps. Alexander Stage is the top Whitman singles player and Niklas Jensen holds the No. 2 position. Both players are unbeaten in singles conference matches and pair as the top Blues' doubles duo. Connor Judson claimed the lone Pirate point in a 6-1 loss to Whitman on February 15th.

The NWC Race: Whitman (7-0) remains atop the standings through the first half of conference action. Whitworth (6-1) holds second with George Fox (4-3) and Lewis & Clark (4-3) two matches behind. Pacific (3-4) and Linfield (3-4) are looking to make a jump into the top four.  

The top four teams in the NWC standings will earn a spot in the NWC Tournament. The tournament will be hosted by the regular season champion.

The Coach: Daniel Redfern enters his third season as head coach of the Whitworth men's tennis program in 2025-26. He holds a 17-29 overall record and 15-13 Northwest Conference mark. Redfern was a two-year standout player for the Pirates, earning first team All-Northwest Conference honors in 2011 and 2012 after transferring to Whitworth from Skagit Valley College.

Looking ahead: The Whitworth men head to California for a two-match trip against Redlands and California Lutheran on March 23-34 before returning to Spokane to host  Pacific (Ore.) and Linfield on March 28-29.
