Pirates hold off Loggers to win baseball series

TACOMA, Wash. – Junior Garcia had three hits and visiting Whitworth took advantage of three Puget Sound errors to defeat the Loggers 7-5 in the finale of a Northwest Conference baseball series on Sunday afternoon at Logger baseball field.

Kyle Memarian and Caleb Gray each hit home runs to help the Pirates improve to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in the NWC.

Puget Sound (8-3 overall, 1-2 NWC) got on the board first when Charlie Degeller scored on Ryan Spero's ground out in the bottom of the first.

The Pirates took advantage of the first Logger error to score their first run.  Carson Coffield singled to third base with Memarian on second.  The throw to first was wide, allowing Memarian to break home from third and score just under the tag.

Whitworth used a two-out, four-run rally to take the lead in the fifth.  All of the runs were unearned because Coffield reached on another error at third base after the first two batters were out.  After Isaac Lee was hit by a pitch, Nate Gray Jr. followed with an RBI single.  With runners at the corners, Gray broke for second which drew a throw from the catcher that got away and allowed Lee to score from third.  Later in the inning Garcia singled down the left field line to plate two more runs for a 5-1 Pirate lead.

Armand Lettiere homered down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth to get one back for Puget Sound.

Memarian and Caleb Gray opened the top of the sixth with back to back solo home runs.  It was Memarian's first of the season and Gray's second of the series and fourth of the season.

The Loggers got two back in the bottom of the sixth when Kellen Krebs drilled a two-run home run to right field.  They scored their final run on a homer by Matt Churchill in the eighth.

Nathaniel Kurano (2-1) got the pitching victory for the Pirates, going 5.2 innings and allowing four runs on five hits and two walks.  He struck out a pair of batters.  Seth Mahler pitched the final 3.1 innings and gave up one run on four hits to pick up his first save of the season.

Whitworth will play its final non-conference series of the season next weekend against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.  The four-game set will be held at Azusa Pacific University.
