FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Whitworth men's tennis outlasted Pacific (Ore.) 4-3 to earn its first win of the season in a Northwest Conference match at Holce Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates (1-2 overall, 1-1 NWC) clinched the match with four three-set singles victories. The Boxers (2-3, 2-1 NWC) suffered their first conference loss of the season.
Connor Judson and Matthew Morrison earned a 6-4 win in the No. 3 doubles match, but Pacific gutted out two close wins in the remaining two matches to claim the doubles point.
Five of six singles matches were back-and-forth battles. Jonathan Nguyen took down Henry Preacher in the No. 2 position 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 to put the Boxers up 2-0. Morrison and Ryan Ashley both dropped the first set in the No. 1 and No. 3 slots before both responding with three-set wins. Dawson Hose followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Matt Froslan in the No. 5 position.
With Pacific leading 3-2, Judson dominated his opponent 6-0 in the first set of the No. 4 singles match but dropped the second set 7-5. With the score hanging in the balance, he battled to a 6-4 win in the third set to tie the match score at three. The match was up to Matt Hossack in the No. 6 position, who also split his first two sets with opponent Steele Tocuchi. Hossack claimed a 6-3 third set win to secure the Whitworth victory.
Morrison, Ashley, and Hossack's singles wins were each their first of the season.
The Bucs are back in action tomorrow at Linfield at 11:00 am.
