Carr wins shot put with school record, leads DIII

SPOKANE, Wash. – Two weeks after Amblessed Okemgbo broke her own Whitworth school record in the women's shot put to open the 2026 indoor track and field season, Madison Carr shot past her teammate in the same event on Saturday at the Inland Northwest Invitational hosted by the Pirates on Saturday at the Podium.

Carr shattered Okemgbo's previous mark of 46'-8.75" by tossing the shot 47'-3" to win the event on Saturday.  Her mark is now leading all of NCAA Division III.  Kylie Loveless took fifth in the shot put with her own personal record of 43'-11.25", which ranks 17th in Division III.  Okemgbo was seventh (42'-8.75").

Carr was also sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 49'-2.25" and Loveless was seventh (48'-5.25"). 

Brianna Tira was the runner-up in the high jump, hitting 5'-3.75".  Evie Bradbury finished seventh in the pole vault, clearing 10-9.5".  Shaloma McCay was third in the women's triple jump with a season-best distance of 35'-5.75" and Madeleine Froese was seventh (32'-9"). 

The Pirate women had good performances on the track as well.  Emily Brown, who set a school record in the 400 meters two weeks ago, finished eighth today with a time of 57.90.  In the 3,000 meters, Lily Jones was sixth (10:31.67) and Kezlie Thygesen was seventh (10:32.23).  Both times were personal records.

The Whitworth women's 4x400 relay took fifth place with a time of 4:06.06.

Na'I Kaanapu had the best finish of the day for the Pirate men.  He was third in the triple jump with a distance of 42'-8", his personal record.  In the long jump, Kaden Hooper was sixth (21'-4.25") and Luke McCorkle was ninth (20'-9.25").

Kenai Herrick was seventh in the men's shot put (47'-8.5") and Eddie Vu was eighth (46'-3.25").  Herrick also finished eighth in the weight throw with a PR of 56'-0.5".

Isaak Akiyama ran a personal record of 4:15.35 to finish fourth in the men's mile.  Cooper Rolfs ran a season-best mark to take eighth in the 400-meter dash in 49.80. 

Whitworth will be back in action at the Podium on Feb. 5-7.
