SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's tennis team earned a dominant sweep of visiting Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference match on Sunday morning.
The Pirates won their eighth straight match over the Loggers (1-8 overall, 1-6 NWC) and advanced to 4-3 in conference play (4-4 overall).
Whitworth swept the doubles matches for the second time this weekend. Gracie Smyley and Faith Kert beat the No. 1 UPS pairing 6-3 for their fifth straight doubles win, all against conference opponents. Paige Oliver and Clara Todd edged their opponent 6-4 in the No. 2 slot while Audrey Judson and Olivia Corbett cruised to a dominant 6-0 win.
The Pirates won each singles match in two sets. Smyley extended her match win streak to six and now holds a 7-1 singles record on the season. Kert earned wore down her opponent (7-5, 6-0) on her way to a second straight win. Oliver and Judson also won their second match of the weekend. Jordan Turner-Esposito (6-2, 6-0) and Morgan McArthur (6-1, 6-0) each earned their first singles victory of the season.
The Whitworth women will begin the second half of conference play on Saturday, March 15th at Whitman before hosting a rematch against Lewis-Clark St. College on Sunday.
