SPOKANE, Wash. – For the first time since 2013, the Whitworth men's tennis team took down visiting Pacific University 6-1 in a Northwest Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates (4-10 overall, 4-5 NWC) snapped a 15-match losing streak against the Boxers, who suffered their fifth straight loss and fell to 5-4 in conference play (5-8 overall).
A doubles sweep gave the Bucs the first point of the match. Matt Hossack and Easton Weir finished first with a 6-3 win before Matthew Morrison and Ryan Ashley got it done 6-4 in the No. 1 position. After missing the last four matches, Henry Preacher returned to the lineup and completed the sweep with a 6-4 win alongside Matt Froslan.
Morrison got the singles matches started with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win. Hossack followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win in the sixth slot before Preacher clinched the historic Whitworth win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the No. 2 position. Weir and Ashley each battled to three-set wins to close the match. Dawson Hose earned the lone Boxer point with a win over the Pirates' Froslan.
Whitworth will host Eastern Washington at 5:00 p.m. tonight before Willamette visits on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
