REDLANDS, Calf. – The Whitworth Pirates were swept in their second softball doubleheader in the state of California, this time against the University Redlands. Redlands took game one 11-3 in six innings before a 4-1 win in game two.
The Pirates (1-13) dropped their sixth consecutive game while the seventh ranked Bulldogs moved to 18-3.
The Bucs will look to get back in the win column on Sunday with a doubleheader at California Lutheran.
Game 1: Redlands 11, Whitworth 3 (6 inn.)
Whitworth had a season-high eight hits, but Redlands used a seven-run fifth inning to put game one out of reach in six innings.
The Pirates put a run on the board in the top of the first with just one hit in seven at-bats. Katie McKinnis singled before two walks and a hit by pitch gave the Bucs a 1-0 lead.
Camryn Sage singled to start the second. Two fielder's choices later, McKinnis smacked her second base hit of the game. Teeghan Reams followed with a single to load the bases before Reagan Ellis was hit by a pitch that plated a run.
The Bulldogs responded with their first runs in the third inning. Three singles pushed across the first Redlands run and Leila Jackson followed with a two-run triple.
Taylor Hofheins tied the game in the third inning with an RBI single.
Redlands broke open the game in the fifth inning. The first run of the inning scored on a fielder's choice. Three batters later, a bases loaded two-run doubled gave the Bulldogs a three-run lead. After a pair of hits, Alyson Stofila cleared the bases with a double to left center that extended the lead to 10-3. An RBI single secured a win in the bottom of the sixth inning.
McKinnis (2-4) and Sage (2-3) led the Pirates offense with a pair of hits each. Reiss McIntyre (0-3) got the start and allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Reams recorded two outs and was responsible for three runs.
Paige Ellinger started for Redlands and gave up two runs in two innings. Brianna Garcia (3-1) earned the win in four innings of relief.
Game 2: Redlands 4, Whitworth 1
Whitworth again scored first but the Pirate bats could not get going in a game two loss.
Hofheins started the second inning with a single and Ellis was hit by a pitch. Kelly Hruza successfully moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Clarabelle Hall came to the plate in her first start of the season and hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Hofheins from third, the only Pirate run of the game.
The Bulldogs answered with a run of their own in the bottom half. With two runners in scoring position, a bunt scored a run and an error sent a runner towards the plate. The Pirates were able to make a play at the plate and keep the game tied at one.
Jackson hit her second RBI triple of the day to put Redlands ahead 2-1 in the third. A single through the left side followed to score Jackson. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the fourth after a stolen base attempt forced a Pirate error and allowed a run to cross.
Whitworth recorded three hits over the next three innings but could not close the gap.
Kaylen Galaviz (3-0) earned the win for Redlands and allowed just one run in 5.1 innings. Katlyn Gandara recorded the final four outs and was credited with a save.
