SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's tennis team got in the win column for this first time this season with a 6-1 victory over Willamette in a Northwest Conference tennis match at Scotford Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Pirates (1-3 overall) earned their first NWC victory of the season (1-2), while the Bearcats (1-1 overall, 1-1 NWC) suffered their first loss.
Whitworth swept all three doubles matches in dominant fashion. Gracie Smyley was joined by Clara Todd for their first pairing in the #1 doubles match and they came away with a 6-1 win. Faith Kert and Paige Oliver paired for a 6-1 win in the second match and Audrey Judson and Olivia Corbett earned their second win of the season in the #3 match (6-0).
Smyley beat the Bearcats #1 player Alexa De Crinis 6-0, 6-2 for her third singles win of the season and first in the #1 match. Kert and Oliver both earned their first singles win of the season in the #2 and #3 matches, respectively. Corbett won her second consecutive singles match in the #5 slot and Libertad Sarmiento got a 6-0, 6-4 win in her first action of the season.
Judson handedly won the first set of the fourth match, but eventually fell to Sofia Spencer in a three-set battle (1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-4) for the Bearcats lone point.
Whitworth will head to Oregon next weekend to take on Linfield on March 1st and George Fox on March 2nd.
