REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whitworth Pirates ended their four-game series at the University of Redlands the same way they started it, by scoring 23 runs on Sunday in an offensive outburst against the Bulldogs. Whitworth won 23-4 in a game called after seven innings due to the NCAA's 10-run rule.
Brock Molenda went 4-5 with two triples and drove in seven RBIs to help the Pirates (5-3) even the series 2-2 at Redlands. Whitworth won Friday's opener 23-8 before the Bulldogs (8-5) swept Saturday's doubleheader. The Pirates will open Northwest Conference play at home next weekend against Puget Sound (5-1).
Whitworth scored the game's first six runs on only two hits. After Austin Paul led off the game with a walk, Caleb Gray drilled his first home run of the season two outs later. The Pirates loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning on a walk and two hit batters. Carson Coffield had a sacrifice fly before Molenda followed with a two-run triple. He then scored by stealing home on a double steal to make it 6-0 in the second frame.
The Pirates broke the game open with seven more runs in the third inning. Junior Garcia had a two-run double and Molenda added his second triple of the game to score three more runs.
Redlands scored three in the fifth to get within 15-4. Anthony Thomas had a two-run double.
Molenda finished his offensive outburst in the sixth frame with a two-run double. Ty Komoda capped the six-run rally with a three-run home run to make it 21-4.
The Bucs scored their final two of the game in the seventh, including an RBI single by Thomas Bennett and Komoda's sacrifice fly.
Quentin O'Connor improved to 2-0 this season for Whitworth after allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.0 innings. He struck out five Bulldogs. Tyler Disch (1.2 innings) and Tyler VanCise (0.1) completed the game.
Redlands used five pitchers in the game. Phillip Economos (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs on two hits and three walks in 1.2 innings as the starter.
