CALDWELL, Idaho – The Whitworth University softball team opened the 2025 season with two losses at the College of Idaho on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates fell 11-0 in five innings in game one before dropping game two 2-1.
Whitworth will continue their opening weekend at Symms Field with a doubleheader against Eastern Oregon starting tomorrow at 11:00am MST.
Game 1 – College of Idaho 11, Whitworth 0 (5 Inn.)
The Yotes (3-1) grabbed their second win of the season behind a five-inning complete game shutout from Abbey Brooks in the circle.
College of Idaho got the scoring started in the second inning with an RBI double off the bat of Sydney Lierman before plating another with a sacrifice fly. The Yotes strung together five hits and added three more runs in the third, all with two outs. Coll. of Idaho broke open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth, scoring six runs to put the game out of reach.
Brooks (1-0) was credited with the win while the Pirates' Reiss McIntyre (0-1) got the loss. McIntyre pitched three innings and gave up nine hits and six runs while striking out three batters. Teeghan Reams allowed four hits and five runs in one inning of relief.
Kelly Hruza recorded both hits for Whitworth, including a double.
Game 2 – College of Idaho 2, Whitworth 1
The Pirates scored a tying run in the sixth inning, but a bases loaded walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh lifted College of Idaho to its second win of the day.
The Yotes plated a run in the bottom of the second inning after two runners advanced into scoring position due to an error and a ground ball scored the runner from third.
The score stalled at 1-0 until the sixth inning, when Kendel Sage hit a two-out single to left field that scored her sister Camryn Sage for the first Whitworth run of the season. Makena Hofford and Katie McKinnis each followed with singles, but Sage was thrown out at the plate to end the inning and knot the game at one.
After two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, College of Idaho's Chloe Flerchinger hit a line drive into the gap to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Momi Lyman (0-1) got the start for the Pirates and pitched 6.2 innings and gave up two hits, two runs, and eight walks to start her season in the circle.
Ambrie Jones started for the Yotes and gave up one run and seven hits in six innings. Drew Williams (1-0) got the win in one inning of relief.
