Whitworth men draw with GFU in home finale

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth set a pair of season-high offensive marks but settled for a 1-1 draw against visiting George Fox in the final men's soccer match of the season on Sunday at Whitworth Soccer Field.

The Pirates (7-4-4 overall, 7-3-4 NWC) had 24 total shots and 12 shots on goal, both season-highs, but the Bruins (5-9-5, 3-8-4 NWC) battled and earned a point in the standings.

Whitworth outshot George Fox by nine in the first half (12-3) and the pressure eventually led to a score in the 38th minute. Dominic Gusman lobbed one of seven Pirate first half corner kicks toward the far post where senior Jordan Voigt headed the ball into the top left corner for his first goal of the season.

Midway through another strong Whitworth second half, the Bruins capitalized on a set piece and evened the score. A long free kick deflected off goalkeeper Aiden Chase in front of the goal and Kilinahe Waring sent it into an open net.

The Pirates possessed the ball in their attacking half for 67% of the match but could not come through with the game-winning goal.

Whitworth finished with a 24-9 advantage in total shots and again showed its strength defensively with just three shots on goal allowed.

A trio of seniors led the Pirate attack as Gusman fired seven shots, Jordan Voigt had five and Keegan Davis had three. Voigt led the team with four shots on goal. Chase made two saves in his final home match.

Carson Tapia led the Bruins with three shots and Kellin Aguiar added a pair. Goalkeeper Chase Nelson made a season-high 11 saves, including seven in the second half, to keep the Bucs at bay.

The Whitworth men close the 2025 season with battles at Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound next weekend.
