Pirate women take momentum into final home weekend

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth women's soccer wraps up the 2025 home schedule this weekend with an opportunity to make a significant move up the Northwest Conference standings. The Pirates will host Lewis & Clark on Saturday and George Fox on Sunday's senior day. Both matches will begin at 11:00am as the first leg of a men's-women's doubleheader.

The Pirates: The Bucs (2-6-7 overall, 2-5-5 NWC) now hold an unbeaten streak of four games after a draw and win last week.

Whitworth tied 1-1 with visiting Whitman on Wednesday. After a scoreless first half, the Blues scored in the 74th minute to take the lead. The Bucs responded less than a minute later. Lily Parker fed the ball to Faith Shaw, who made a move to the middle of the box and fired a shot into the left side of the net. Whitman finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots, but the Pirates held on for the point. Paige Broadrick made seven saves.

On Saturday, Whitworth downed Linfield 2-1 to grab its second win of the season. The Bucs struck early as Kayla and Maia Santa Monica connected for a goal in the fifth minute. In the second half, Katherine Kent lobbed a corner kick into the box that Claire Nguyen headed into the back of the net to double the Pirate lead. Whitworth remained in control despite a Wildcats goal in the final minute. The Pirates had a 10-7 advantage in shots and held Linfield to just two shots on goal.

The Opponents: Lewis & Clark visits with a 3-9-4 overall record and 3-6-3 mark in conference play. The Pioneers defeated Pacific 2-0 and played to a scoreless draw at George Fox last weekend. L&C has scored nine goals and given up 13 against conference opponents. The Pios' 148 fouls in conference play lead the league, setting up for a physical match on Saturday. Senior midfielder Carli Driskill leads the attack with a goal and team-high six assists. Junior Mischa Vanek leads the team with three goals. Three goalkeepers have made at least three starts for L&C with senior Anna Ingadottir leading the way with nine starts and 1.44 goals against average. Whitworth has a 15-3-2 home record against L&C since 2004. The Pios beat the Bucs 2-0 in Portland on October 5th.

George Fox (0-9-7, 0-8-5 NWC) is still winless heading into its Eastern Washington road trip this weekend. The Bruins earned a draw against Lewis & Clark in their lone match last weekend. GFU has scored one goal in conference play and given up 16 through 13 matches. The Bruins average a league low 6.77 shots and 2.92 shots on goal per game. Senior Alexis Breer and sophomore Makena Speer each have a goal on the season to lead the Bruin attack. Freshman Marisa Lam has started ten games at goalkeeper and averages 1.24 goals-against. GFU has not beaten the Pirates since 2018. The Bucs and Bruins played to a scoreless draw in their first matchup this season on October 4th.

Senior Sunday: Prior to Sunday's match against George Fox, the Whitworth women's soccer seniors will be recognized for their accomplishments and contributions to the program as they play their final match at Whitworth Soccer Field. Paige Broadrick, Maia Santa Monica, Claire Nguyen, Riley Ng, Addison Dizard, Alexa Deatherage, Lily Parker, Madison Carr, Kylee Russell, and Mac Lembcke will be each be recognized.

NWC Standings: Pacific Lutheran (30 points) remains atop the conference with a 9-0-3 record. Puget Sound (8-0-4, 28 points) holds second with Linfield (6-3-3) trailing. Pacific (3-4-6) separated into fourth with Whitman (2-3-7) moving into fifth. Lewis & Clark (3-6-3) and Willamette (2-6-6) each have points with Whitworth (2-5-5) closing in. George Fox (0-8-5) rounds out the standings.

With a pair of wins this weekend, the Pirates could climb as much as four spots in the conference standings dependent on results across the NWC.

The Coach: Whitworth soccer alum Cameron Bushéy is in his fourth season as head coach of the women's soccer team. The Pirates have a 28-26-19 record under Bushéy and a 26-21-13 mark in the Northwest Conference.

Bushey came from Stanislaus State, where he was the top assistant coach. Bushey has club coaching stints in Spokane and Colorado, and he was an assistant at Gonzaga University for two seasons (2018-19). He graduated from Whitworth in 2012 as a four-time All-NWC honoree who helped lead the Pirates to three NWC titles and NCAA Division III tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009.

Coming up: Whitworth will close the 2025 season with a pair of challenges against Pacific Lutheran on November 8th and Puget Sound on November 9th.
