Corban edges Pirate women 2-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth could not hold on to an early lead as visiting Corban University rallied for a 2-1 win over the Pirates on Saturday in a non-conference game at the Whitworth soccer field.

The Pirates (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season despite outshooting the Warriors (3-1-1) 30-8 in the match.

Camryn Kuolt turned a set piece into a goal in the 16th minute when she headed in a free kick from Taliya Miyama for her first goal of the season.

Mya Alston tied the match for Corban in the 30th minute when she took advantage of a defensive mistake to steal a pass and beat Pirate keeper Anna Boyer one-on-one.

With Whitworth pressing forward most of the second half, the Warriors took advantage of one successful counter in the 70th minute for the winning goal.  Fatima Jimenez sent a long pass forward to Alston, who beat the Pirate defense to the ball and finished with a one-touch shot.

Boyer made four saves for Whitworth, while Ava Hayes stopped six shots for Corban.

The Pirates will stay at home to open Northwest Conference play next weekend against George Fox and Pacific (Ore.).
