Lacrosse rolls past Puget Sound 20-4 in final road match

TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth University rolled to a 20-4 win at Puget Sound in its final regular season road lacrosse match in 2024 as the Bucs secured a winning Northwest Conference record.

Whitworth improved to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the NWC with two matches left.  The Loggers fell to 3-11, 2-8.

Kenzie Hemman and Rebecca Irwin scored four goals apiece to lead the Pirates.

Whitworth jumped out to a 5-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.  Hemman scored twice and Campbell Vincent scored twice in that run.  The Bucs led 7-2 after one period.

After Puget Sound got within 8-3 with just under 11 minutes to play in the second period, the Whitworth defense settled in and didn't allow the Loggers another goal until ten seconds were left to play in the contest, a span of nearly 40 minutes.  The Pirates outscored the Loggers 4-1 in the second quarter, 5-0 in the third and 4-1 in the fourth.

Whitworth outshot UPS 51-10, controlling possession by forcing 25 Logger turnovers and winning 19 out of 26 draw controls.  The Pirates forced 10 free position shots and scored on five.

Irwin had four goals and an assist for five points.  Abby Hahn also had five points with two goals and three assists.  Hemman added eight draw controls, four caused turnovers and five ground balls to her four-goal total.  Sage Fosnock made four saves while allowing only four goals.

Maggie Ott scored two of Puget Sound's goals.

Whitworth will conclude the regular season at home next weekend when the Pirates host Pacific (Ore.) on Saturday and Willamette on Sunday.
