SPOKANE, WASH – Whitworth avoided a series sweep with a 15-3 over Puget Sound victory in the final game of a Northwest Conference baseball series at Logger Baseball Field on Saturday.
The Pirates improved to 15-6 overall and 6-5 in conference play. The Loggers' fell to 11-13 overall and 3-6 in conference after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader.
The Bucs' offense tallied 14 hits and took advantage of our errors to score six unearned runs while the pitching staff scattered 13 hits.
The Pirates jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, Spencer Shipman and Ty Quiggle each contributed an RBI. Aaron Clogston kept the momentum going in the second inning with an RBI double down the left field line.
Puget Sound's Cody Hirano doubled in the bottom half of the second to cut the lead to 4-2.
Quiggle and Kevin Corder's RBI groundouts in the third inning were enough to push Whitworth's lead back to four runs. Serious damage was done by the Pirates' offense in the fifth inning where they recorded five runs on four hits to increase the margin to 11-2.
The Loggers were able to slow Whitworth's offense for three innings until the Pirates rallied for another four runs in the ninth inning to win 15-3.
Aidan Morrison went 3-4 at the plate and had two RBI's, while Quiggle went 3-4 with three RBIs.
Whitworth's Quentin O'Conner started on the mound and scattered nine hits and allowed three runs in 6.2 innings of work. Reliever Connor Ashworth pitched 2.1 scoreless innings and allowed four hits.
Cal Johnson started on the mound for Puget Sound and lasted just 1.1 innings before after allowing two earned runs on three hits. Joe Schwab went 2.2 innings of relief and allowed three earned runs. Braden Blackwell (1IP, 0ER, 2H), Charlie Decker (3.1IP, 4ER, 3H), and Mason Seay (0.2IP, 1H) also all made appearances for the Logger's pitching staff.
The Pirates will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scrips in a three-game non-conference series next weekend at Paul Merkel Field in Spokane. The first pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
