Salem, Ore. – Whitworth softball split with Willamette in Saturday's doubleheader in Salem, winning game one 4-3 before Harley Raymond walked off to give Willamette a 4-3 win in game two.
The Pirates (5-13, 1-5 NWC) picked up their first Northwest Conference win of the season, but they remain tied with Willamette (5-11, 1-5 NWC) in the standings.
Whitworth had won 21 straight games against Willamette dating back to 2017 before the Bearcats rallied for three runs in the seventh to complete a walk-off comeback in game two. The series will wrap up on Sunday with games at 11:00 and 1:30.
Game 1 – Whitworth 4, Willamette 3
Corinne Vasiloff (3-6) pitched a complete game allowing a pair of earned runs on five hits, and Jessica Rusconi went 3-3 at the plate including a double in the sixth to put Whitworth up 4-2.
The Pirates trailed 1-0 until the third inning when Taylor Hofheins put the ball in play to score Haley Montoya, Jazz Johnson drove in a go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to score Amy Pederson. Lizzy Bradford delivered a single in the fourth to put the Pirates up 3-1.
In the sixth, clinging to a one-run lead Rusconi delivered a key insurance run on her third hit of the day, a double down the left field line to score Johnson.
Pinheiro doubled to right to kick off the Bearcats seventh-inning, but Vasiloff managed to close it out forcing three straight groundouts to clinch the 4-3 win.
Jordyn Johnson (0-5) got the start for Willamette and allowed two earned runs (four total) in 5.1 innings. Each team committed two errors.
Game 2 – Willamette 4, Whitworth 3
A three-run third inning sparked by RBIs from Julia Dillon and Jazz Johnson gave Whitworth control for most of the afternoon, but Willamette rallied for three runs in the seventh and claimed game two on a walk off single from Harley Raymond.
Mia Rogers reached base on an error from Johnson to start the seventh and Emma Elliott followed that with a two-run blast to even things at 3-3. Kendra Knapp came up with a double to keep momentum alive before Raymond tagged a ball to center to score Knapp for the win.
Momi Lyman (2-6) pitched six innings and allowed just one run before giving up that seventh-inning home run to Elliott. Vasiloff came in and surrendered the walk-off.
Johnson went 2-3 from the plate with an RBI in the fourth inning which put Whitworth up 3-0.
