Softball falls twice at EOU on Saturday

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth dropped both ends of a non-conference softball doubleheader at NAIA #24 Eastern Oregon on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers defeated the Pirates 6-1 and 3-1 to improve to 6-1 while the Bucs fell to 3-5.  The teams will complete the four-game set on Sunday with another doubleheader that starts at 11:00 am.

Game 1: Eastern Oregon 6, Whitworth 1
The Mountaineers scored four in the second to pull away early and cruised in the opener.

EOU got on the board in the second with a four-run rally, including a bases-loaded single by leadoff hitter Haley Tyree that drove in two runs.  Katelyn Evans and Hannah Tyree followed with RBI singles to cap the rally.

The Mountaineers added their fifth run in the third on Madison Olson's home run.  Haley Tyree scored on a ground out in the fourth for the final run.

Whitworth got on the board in the top of the sixth when Jazz Johnson's single drove home Hayley Montoya.

Kaylie Hoskins (2-1) went the distance in the circle for EOU, giving up one earned run on three hits.  She struck out 14 Pirates.

Corinne Vasiloff (2-2) went the distance for the Bucs, allowing six earned run on ten hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

Game 2: Eastern Oregon 3, Whitworth 1
The Pirates scored first, but could not come up with the timely hits they needed later in the game before falling 3-1 in the nightcap.

Montoya got the Pirates on the board with an unearned run in the top of the first.  After she reach on an error leading off the game, she stole second.  With one out she stole third and was able to score when the throw down got away.

The Mountaineers tied the game in the bottom of the second on Kelly Monaghan's RBI single.  EOU got the final two runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by Karly Hanosky and Haley Tyree. 

Haley Tyree finished the day 5-8 with three RBIs.

Whitworth left the bases loaded in the third and had two runners on base to end the fourth, fifth and sixth frames.

Kylie Parsons (2-0) got the pitching victory for Eastern, scattering seven hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Momi Lyman (1-3) went the distance for the Pirates, giving up two earned runs on nine hits and three walks.  She struck out two batters.
