SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth bounced back from a 1-0 loss at Linfield last weekend with a 1-0 win over visiting Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference women's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates improved to 5-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the NWC while the Pioneers dropped to 3-3-3, 1-3-1.
Yacine Bitibale gave Whitworth the lead in the 11th minute with her third goal of the season. Baylee Trejo sent a ball forward to Claire Nguyen, who crossed to Bitibale in the penalty area.
The Pirates were able to keep NWC-leading scorer Celeste Schreifels in check throughout the match. She had only one shot, often because Whitworth controlled possession of the ball for most of the contest. The Pirates had the ball for 61% of the match.
Whitworth had a 23-8 advantage in shots, 13-3 edge in shots on-goal. Paige Broadrick made three saves to claim the clean sheet. Delaney Jones made 11 saves for L&C.
Whitworth will look to build a winning steak when the Bucs host Willamette on Sunday.
