Moore leads Pirate women to first win

SPOKANE, Wash. – Emmy Moore scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Whitworth to a 2-0 win over visiting Pacific University in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

The Pirates (1-4-3 overall, 1-3 NWC) picked up their first victory of the season, while the Boxers dropped to 2-4, 1-2.

Whitworth nearly got on the board in the first ten minutes when Kylee Russell drove a hard shot from the top of the box toward the upper half of the goal, but Pacific keeper Isabelle De La Cruz got a hand on the ball to knock it over the bar.

The Pirates got on the board in the 14th minute on a set piece after a Boxer foul outside the top of the box.  Moore stepped up to take the free kick and found an opening to her left of the defensive wall and inside the goal post.  It was her second goal of the season.

Whitworth doubled its lead less than two minutes into the second half.  Moore got her head on a corner kick and her shot bounced off the crossbar to Maddie Kutschkau, who put the ball back into the net for her first goal of the season.  Moore got credit for the assist.

The Pirates controlled possession throughout the match, outshooting Pacific 19-9, including a 7-2 edge in shots on-goal.

De La Cruz made five saves, while Kate Nelson only had to make two saves to post her 18th shutout as Whitworth's goalkeeper.

Whitworth returns to the road for matches at Willamette and Linfield next weekend.
