Whitworth lacrosse loses 20-6 at Occidental

LOS ANGELES – Halle Knutson scored seven goals and Olivia Okamoto had six goals to lead Occidental to a 20-6 win over visiting Whitworth in a non-conference women's lacrosse match on Friday night.

The Pirates split their trip to Southern California and fell to 5-8.  The Tigers improved to 6-5 with their fourth straight victory.

Oxy scored the first five goals of the match, including two by Knutson.  But Whitworth closed within 6-3 on goals by Kenzie Hemman, Rebecca Irwin and Megan Whitman. The Tigers led 8-3 after the first period and 13-4 at the half.

Oxy outscored the Pirates 4-0 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.  The Tigers finished with a 35-20 advantage in shots and a 20-12 edge in ground balls.

Sierra Witte scored twice for Whitworth and finished the California trip with seven goals.  Whitman also scored twice.  Hemman had four ground balls, four caused turnovers and five draw controls.

Hannah Lew started in goal for the Bucs and gave up eight goals in the first quarter, with two saves.  Sage Fosnock played the final 45 minutes and allowed 12 goals with six saves.

Whitworth will return to action next Wednesday with a Northwest Conference match at Whitman.
