Pirates dominate in sweep at Occidental

LOS ANGELES – Momi Lyman and Corinne Vasiloff dominated in the circle, while Heather Menzer had a perfect day at the plate with six runs batted in to lead visiting Whitworth to a sweep at Occidental in a non-conference softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates (10-9) won the first game 11-1 in five innings then defeated the Tigers (5-12) 7-1 in the second contest.

Whitworth will conclude its trip to Southern California with another doubleheader at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Monday.

Game 1 – Whitworth 11, Occidental 1 (5 inn.)
Lyman threw a five-inning no hitter and Menzer went 3 for 3 with four RBIs to lead the Pirates to an easy win in the opener.

Menzer's two-run double in the top of the first inning gave Whitworth an early lead.

The Tigers scored their only run after their first two batters drew walks then moved up a base on a sacrifice.  Alysha Wagner scored on a ground out to second base.

The Pirates broke open the game in the second.  Haley Montoya singled in two runs, then scored at the end of the same play on a throwing error by first base.  Menzer added an RBI single later in the inning for a 6-1 lead.

Jessica Rusconi singled in a run in the third to make it 7-1.  Whitworth scored four more runs in the fourth.  Menzer added her second RBI double, and third run-scoring hit, of the game.  Another run scored when Jazz Johnson reached on an error.  The two final runs scored on another throwing error by the Tigers.

Lyman did not allow a hit and walked four batters.  She struck out two to improve to 3-4 this season.

Zada Day-Adams (3-5) started in the circle for Occidental and gave up seven runs on six hits and three walks in two innings.  Ariel Lashinsky pitched the final three innings and allowed four runs.

Menzer finished 3 for 3 at the plate with four RBIs, while Montoya went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Game 2 – Whitworth 7, Occidental 1
Vasiloff tossed her second complete-game victory of the weekend and Menzer completed a perfect day at the plate as the Pirates earned the doubleheader sweep.

Vasiloff (7-4) went all seven innings, allowing only one run on five hits.  She stuck out four Tigers without allowing a walk.

Just like the opener, Menzer got Whitworth on the scoreboard in the first inning with an RBI single that scored Mattea Nelson.

Taylor Hofheins scored from third base as Rusconi was caught stealing at second base on a double-steal attempt in the second inning.

Kennedy Robison's RBI single in the fourth increased the lead to 3-0.  The Pirates broke open the game with three runs in the fifth.  Julia Dillon scored from third base on an infield single off the bat of Hofheins.  Reagan Ellis followed with a two-run triple to deep left field.

Menzer drilled her second RBI single of the game in the top of the sixth for a 7-0 lead.  Occidental scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth on Wagner's single.

Ellery Mitchell (1-7) started in the circle for the Tigers, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings.  Lashinsky finished up for Oxy.

Menzer went 4-4 at the plate to finish the day 7 for 7.  Hofheins went 3 for 4, while Ellis finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs.  Nelson scored twice.
