REDLANDS, Calif. – Redlands built a 10-0 lead through five innings and went on to defeat visiting Whitworth 11-4 in a non-conference baseball game on Friday afternoon at The Yard.
The Bulldogs (4-2) scored in each of the first five innings. The Pirates (3-5) lost the first of a four-game road trip to Southern California. Whitworth will play a three-game set at California Lutheran this weekend.
By the time Cade McClelland hit his two-run home run for Redlands in the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs had taken a 6-0 lead.
Trailing 10-0, the Pirates scored their first run in the seventh when Austin Paul walked with the bases loaded. Whitworth scored three more in the eighth starting with an RBI double from Zach Tincher. Hunter Dryden followed with a run-scoring single and Tincher went to third. Dryden and Tincher pulled off a double steal for the final run.
Whitworth only had one hit through six innings against Redlands starting pitcher Tyler Reiter (1-0). Two Bulldog relievers finished up.
Giovanni Costello (0-2) allowed seven runs (only three earned) on six hits and two walks through four innings. Josh Grimes threw the final four innings for the Bucs, allowing four runs on seven hits.
Tincher finished with a hit and two walks for Whitworth and scored two runs.
