PORTLAND, Ore. – Ellle Jimenez and Amblessed Okemgbo had 12 kills apiece to lead visiting Whitworth to a 3-1 win over Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday night at Pamplin Gymnasium.
The Pirates completed a road swing through Oregon with a record of 11-7 overall and 8-2 in the NWC. Saturday night's 25-15, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21 victory was their fourth straight win and second of the season over the Pioneers (6-12, 1-9).
Lewis & Clark took a 9-7 lead in the first set after Whitworth's attack error. The Bucs responded with a 14-2 run to go ahead 21-11. Kaity Barr was in on three blocks and had a kill in the run. Whitworth won the set with a kill from Okemgbo.
Lewis & Clark opened the second set with a 10-3 run and the Pioneers still led 18-11 after a Pirate attack error. Whitworth went on a 10-4 run to get within 22-21 on a kill from Barr. But the Pirates could not push into the lead and the Pioneers finished the set with a kill from Annika Traxler.
Whitworth opened the third set with an 8-1 lead following an ace by Barr. L&C pulled back within 12-11 with a 10-4 run, but the Pirates responded with their own 12-3 spurt to get within game point following a Pioneer error. The Pioneers scored four straight points before Whitworth closed the set on a kill from Franklin.
The fourth set was tied 11-11 before the Pirates used a 6-2 run to take a lead they would not give up. Franklin had consecutive kills for a 19-14 lead before the Pioneers got within 21-18 on another Traxler kill. Franklin's kill ended the match.
Jimenez had 12 kills and three block assists for a team-high 13.5 points. Barr had seven kills, two aces, one solo block and six block assists for 13.0 points. Mya Rodriguez (24) and Josephine Thompson (16) combined for 40 assists as Whitworth hit .207.
Izzy Willis posted match-highs of 17.0 points and 15 kills for L&C. Traxler added 11 kills, but the Pioneers hit only .092.
