PARKLAND, Wash. – Visiting Whitworth outscored Pacific Lutheran 14-4 at the end of the fourth set to close out a hard-fought road victory over the Lutes, 25-20, 26-28, 25-20, 25-21 in the Northwest Conference volleyball opener for both teams on Friday night.
The defending conference champion Pirates improved to 7-2 overall while PLU dropped to 5-4. Whitworth will try to complete a sweep of the trip to Tacoma on Saturday at Puget Sound.
The Lutes scored the opening point of the opening set, but never led again in that frame as Whitworth took control. The Pirates hit .163 in the set while holding the Lutes to .070. Jaye Hodge, Ella Jimenez and Cassidy Franklin all had three kills in the set for the Bucs.
PLU jumped out 5-0 in the second set and eventually stretched the lead to 17-9 on a service ace by Makenna Jackson. Whitworth stormed back to tie the set 19-19 with a 10-2 run, which included four kills by Hodge. The Pirates used a 3-0 run to take a 25-24 lead and served for the set before PLU closed with a 4-1 spurt to even the match 1-1. Hodge finished with five kills in the frame for Whitworth, while Claire Hindman had five kills for the Lutes.
PLU went up 3-0 in the third set, but Whitworth outscored the Lutes 11-3 to go ahead 11-6 and force a timeout. After PLU pulled within 11-10, the Pirates retook control with five straight points, including a pair of kills by Maddie Lee. Lee finished the set for the Bucs with another kill and ended with seven in the frame.
PLU looked poised to send the match to a fifth set after going ahead 17-11 in the fourth frame after a block by Hindman. Whitworth fought back to take a 20-18 lead with a 9-1 run that included service aces by Eva Millan and Megan Lange. Lee ended the match with her final kill to complete the 14-4 run.
Hodge finished with 13 kills and Lee had 12 for the Pirates. Franklin had ten kills and Jimenez added nine. Jimenez led Whitworth with five blocks. The Bucs served nine aces in the match, including four by Hodge and three by Jimenez. Lee led Whitworth with 17 digs.
Elle Thomas had 14 kills for PLU, while Hindman had a dozen and Baylee Johnson finished with eleven.
