LA VERNE, Calif. -- LA VERNE, CALIF.— La Verne shut out visiting Whitworth 3-0 in a season-opening women's soccer on Thursday night in Southern California.
The Pirates were competitive with the Leopards in a scoreless first half.
La Verne got on the scoreboard in the 50th minute on a goal by Ana Preciado. Six minutes later Antonia Escobar added another to give La Verne a 2-0 lead.
The Pirates got one shot on goal during the entire match, unable to get it past the Leopard's goalkeeper Mckenzie Maggiore. La Verne dominated Whitworth in total shots 23-3.
La Verne's Michelle Benavides scored the final goal of the match in the 86th minute.
Whitworth's goalkeeper Kate Nelson was credited with eight saves in 78 minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Paige Broadrick had one save in 12 minutes in her Pirate debut.
Whitworth will look for the first win of the season on Saturday at 10:00 AM at Whittier.
