Whitman Rolls in Series Finale

SPOKANE, Wash. – Garrett Runyon homered and drove in four runs to back the solid pitching of Wyatt Adams in visiting Whitman's 12-3 win over Whitworth on Wednesday in the finale of a Northwest Conference baseball series at Merkel Field.

Runyon went 3 for 5 and scored three runs for the Blues (5-14 overall, 3-5 NWC), who took two of three games in a series that was originally scheduled for Feb. 26-27 at Merkel Field.  The first two games were played in Walla Walla because of unplayable conditions in Spokane.

Adams and Whitworth's Josh Grimes each allowed a first inning run, then held the opponent scoreless for the next three frames.  Runyon hit a solo home run to left with two outs in the top of the first inning.

Jaxsen Sweum's double drove in Dawson Warner for the Pirates (4-16, 3-6) in the bottom of the first.

The game was still tied 1-1 until the top of the fifth when the Blues scored seven runs.  A hit batter, double and a walk loaded the bases with no one out.  Runyon followed with a two-run double to left field.  Teague Condor added a two-run single to end the day for Grimes.  The rally continued with three more runs scoring against Jarred Yara, including a two-run single by Drew Vannaman.

Riley Cissne's double got a run back for the Bucs in the bottom of the fifth, but Brent Maguire answered for Whitman in the top of the sixth.

Whitman tacked on three more runs in the eighth, including Runyon's fourth RBI of the game and an RBI double by Condor.

Sweum added a second RBI in the bottom of the ninth when Luke Bruno scored on his ground out to first.

Adams (1-0) went six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits.  Benjamin Seashore-Hobson, Mateus Conaway and Jack Hostetler each threw one inning in relief.

Grimes (0-3) allowed six runs on five hits and four walks in four-plus innings.  Yara was followed by Dillon McCardle, Hunter Williams and Riley Whelan.

Cissne finished 3-4 at the plate for the Pirates, who travel to play at Willamette in a three-game series this weekend.
