CLAREMONT, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer scored six runs in the fifth inning and held visiting Whitworth to only one run behind Harry Deliyanis' seven innings pitched and five strikeouts in a dominant 9-1 non-conference baseball victory on Friday.
Pirate pitcher Jake Leary and Deliyanis held the offenses scoreless until the fourth inning when a David Bedrosian home run drove in three runs for the Sagehens.
Jimmy Legg hit a single up the middle and then stole second to kick off the fifth inning for Pomona-Pitzer. Kevin Lo hit a single to score Legg, and then stole second. Lo advanced to third on an error by the pitcher, and Caleb Millikan was hit by a pitch and advanced to first. Leary was pulled from the game and replaced by Hudson Andrews, who gave up a single to score Millikan and Lo. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and James Schmidt hit a triple to the left center field wall to score all the runners on base to end the inning up 9-0.
Whitworth added one run in the top of the sixth inning. Dawson Warner singled and advanced to second on an error by the catcher. He advanced to third on a Deliyanis balk. Jaxsen Sweum reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Brendan Duncan hit into a double play that scored Warner. Deliyanis recorded one more walk in the inning.
Bedrosian and Schmidt both had three RBIs in the victory for Pomona-Pitzer.
Leary (0-1) picked up the pitching loss for Whitworth, giving up seven hits and six runs in four innings pitched. He walked two batters and recorded two strikeouts. Andrews gave up four hits and three runs, all earned, in 3.2 innings of work. He walked three batters and had three strikeouts.
Deliyannis (3-0) picked up his third pitching win of the season, giving up three hits and one run in seven innings. He walked two batters and struck out five. Joe Williams shut out the Pirates in two innings of relief, not allowing a single hit or run and recording five strikeouts.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow at noon and 3pm.
