Box Score 2 NEWBERG, Ore. – Whitworth scored three runs in its final at-bat of the day to pull out a 5-3 win in the nightcap of a non-conference baseball doubleheader at George Fox on Saturday.
The Pirates (1-4) picked up their first win of the season after losing the first game 8-3. The Bruins are now 3-3. The teams will complete the four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday.
Game 1 – George Fox 8, Whitworth 3
Travis Miller and Chase Fetzer each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Bruins to a win in the opener.
GFU scored three in the third on a balk, an RBI single by Fetzer and a sacrifice fly.
Whitworth pulled within 3-2 in the top of the sixth when Ryan Gross drilled a two-run homer.
The Bruins broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Miller had a two-run single in the rally and Fetzer added his second RBI single of the game.
JJ Fahnlander added a home run in the top of the eighth for the Bucs.
Christopher Stone threw six innings for GFU to get the win, allowing two runs on six hits. Two relievers followed.
Dylan Bishop (0-1) threw four innings as the starter for Whitworth, allowing three runs on six hits. Evan Norden and Dylan Owen followed with two innings each.
Jaxsen Sweum, Brenden Duncan and Luke Bruno all had a pair of hits for the Pirates.
Game 2 – Whitworth 5, George Fox 3
Brett Thomas threw five strong innings and Duncan hit a home run to lead the Pirates to their first win of the season.
Duncan's two-run homer in the top of the fourth gave Whitworth a 2-1 lead and Thomas left looking like he might pick up the win.
But Emery Miller doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and scored on an error to tie the game.
Duncan and Jared Yara started the Bucs' winning rally with a single and a double, respectively. Bruno's single drove in Duncan. The second run scored a passed ball and Dawson Warner followed with an RBI single.
GFU got a run back in the bottom of the seventh before Hunter Drydan struck out Fetzer looking to end the game. Dryden (1-0) picked up the win in relief after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits in two innings.
Warner and Duncan had two hits each for the Bucs.
Sean Wiese (1-1) took the loss for GFU after allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in 6.1 innings.
