Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Defending Northwest Conference champion George Fox outscored visiting Whitworth 10-2 in the second half to pull away for a 19-7 victory over the Pirates in a women's lacrosse match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates fell to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the NWC, but show significant signs of improvement from 2019 in their first two matches of 2020.
Whitworth hung with the two-time defending conference champions through much of the first half. Sidney Tripke, who scored four goals in her Pirate debut on Saturday night, scored back-to-back goals ten minutes into the match to pull Whitworth within 3-2. Carcie Chappell's goal ten minutes later made it 5-3 in favor of the Bruins. Trinity Frank's goal made it 7-4 and Tripke's third goal of the half got the Bucs within 9-5 with seconds left in the period.
Madison Strickland scored three first half goals for George Fox (1-1, 1-0).
Kylee Walker scored 57 seconds into the second half to get Whitworth within three. But the Bruins scored six unanswered goals over the next nine minutes to increase their lead to 15-6 and break the game open. Jennifer Burke had consecutive goals in the run for GFU.
Tripke scored Whitworth's final goal of the match to give her eight goals in the first two contests of the season.
Whitworth will travel to Whitman on Wednesday before hosting Puget Sound in the home opener on Saturday March 14th.
