Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – Jill Hughes pulled out a 6-3, 6-4 victory at #6 singles to give visiting Whitworth a 5-4 non-conference women's tennis victory over Puget Sound on Saturday evening.
The Pirates claimed their second win of the season to improve to 2-1. The Loggers fell to 1-2.
Whitworth took two of the three doubles matches. Avery Liening and Grace Bethards combined for an 8-4 win at #2 doubles. Hughes and Marissa Kirk pulled out a 9-7 win at #3 doubles. Erica Lee and Emma Jo Wiley fell 9-7 to Lisa Owen and Nicki Bouche at #1 doubles.
Owen topped Lee 6-3, 6-1 at #1 singles to tie the match 2-2 and UPS took a 3-2 lead when Bridget Myers topped Wiley 6-1, 6-3 at #3 singles.
Bethards retied the match 3-3 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at #4 singles before the Loggers went back ahead 4-3 on Bouch's 6-3, 6-4 win over Liening at #2 singles.
Kirk's 7-5, 6-2 win at #5 singles created a 4-4 tie, setting up Hughes with the deciding point. Hughes defeated Lia Van Streeter at #6 for Whitworth's win.
The Pirates will complete their trip to Tacoma with another non-conference match at Pacific Lutheran on Sunday.
