SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's soccer team scored one goal in each half to defeat visiting Northwest Conference rival Whitman 2-1 on Wednesday.
The Pirates (2-5 overall, 1-2 NWC) put 8 of 21 shots on goal in an aggressive offensive effort firing. Whitman (0-7 overall, 0-3 NWC) put 9 of 15 shots on target in an equally aggressive effort.
The Pirates' scoring started in the ninth minute when McKenzie Hemp linked up with Courtney Potter on a cross from the left side for the only goal of the first half.
In the second half, Hemp intercepted a reversal pass from a Whitman defender and took it down the left side of the box and found Leah Corra waiting in front of the goal to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute. Saba Zewdie scored Whitman's first goal of the season after she intercepted a pass and launched a shot from well outside the box to the top right corner of the goal in the 83rd minute.
Whitworth's Sienna Tanner earned her second win of the season with eight saves to move to 2-2. Whitman's Haley Case (0-6) had six saves and gave up two goals.
Coming Up: Whitworth will host the Willamette Bearcats on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. in a Northwest Conference match up.
