TACOMA, Wash. – After taking an early lead on a penalty kick, the visiting Whitworth women's soccer team fell 5-2 at the University of Puget Sound on Sunday in a Northwest Conference match.
Whitworth (1-5 overall, 0-2 NWC) put four of its six shots on target. The Loggers (5-1 overall, 2-0 NWC) had 16 total shots, 10 of which were on target.
The Pirates started the scoring on only their second shot of the game after a Whitworth player was taken down inside the box in the 18th minute. Kathryn Bischoff stepped up to take the penalty kick for the Pirates and drilled it top right past Logger goalkeeper Lauren Thomas.
Puget Sound's scoring frenzy started in the 30th minute off of an Erin Brosnan corner kick sent to the near side top of the box to Kendra Elderkin who launched it top left corner. Elderkin then played a through ball to Lura Morton who finished a one-touch shot inside the box in the 35th minute. In the 36th minute, Morton dribbled past multiple Whitworth defenders down the right side of the field before crossing over and finishing for her second goal of the game.
Jaqeulyn Anderson scored off of a penalty kick in the 60th minute to give the Loggers a 4-1 lead. In the 71st minute, Puget Sound's Grayson Williams-Krebs scored off an assist from Gabbie Berg. Whitworth's Kara Need found Leah Corra in the 89th minute on a hard cross from the left side to make the score 5-2.
Pirate goalkeeper Jenna Rogers had five saves and gave up five goals in her first Northwest Conference start. Thomas handled two of the four Whitworth shots on goal while giving up two goals.
Looking Ahead: The Pirates will host Whitman on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and Willamette on Sunday at 12 p.m. in their first home games of the 2016 season.
