SPOKANE, Wash. – Linfield opened the Northwest Conference women's tennis schedule with a dominating 8-1 win over host Whitworth on Friday night at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Wildcats improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the NWC while the Pirates fell to 0-2, 0-1.
Ashley Winslow was Whitworth's only winner as she defeated Courtney Mostul 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) at #6 singles. Paige Rohrbach was the only other Pirate player to win a set on Friday night. But she fell to Sierra Lemon 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) at #5 singles.
The Wildcats swept the top four singles matches. Ella Riddle defeated Bella Hoyos 6-0, 6-2 at #1 singles and Elsa Harris topped Jennifer Adams 6-1, 6-0 at #2 singles. Marisa Doveri beat Emma Jo Wiley 6-1, 6-4 at #3 while Marisa Kume won by retirement against Whitworth's Anabelle Burns at #4 while leading 7-5, 1-0.
Linfield also took all three doubles matches. Riddle and Harris beat Hoyos and Adams 8-2 at #1 while Doveri and Lemon topped Burns and Wiley 8-4 at #2. Mostul and Basia Kopecka rolled by Winslow and Rohrbach 8-1 at #3 doubles.
Whitworth will return to action with matches next weekend at Lewis & Clark (Saturday) and George Fox (Sunday).
