SPOKANE, Wash. - After falling to a 1-0 deficit in the first half, the Whitworth women's soccer team scored two second half goals to defeat Linfield 2-1 on Sunday in a Northwest Conference matchup.
The Pirates (5-7, 4-4 NWC) outshot the Wildcats (3-7-2, 3-3-2 NWC) 24 to 4 on total shots. Whitworth had 11 shots on goal in addition to holding Linfield to only three shots on target.
Despite outshooting the Wildcats 9-4 in the first half, Jamie Neimann was able to find the back of the net off of a corner kick. Linfield's Jamie Mars played the ball in to the box off of the set piece and was unable to find a teammate. The ball fell to the feet of Neimann who finished in the 39th minute.
In the 63rd minute, after a solid passing possession from the Pirates, Courtney Potter found Kelly Wucherer who launched a shot from the top of the box to the right of Linfield goalkeeper Sarah Bailey. Whitworth pressured the Linfield defense, keeping the ball in its attacking third for the remainder of the game. Arielle Van Peursem scored the game-winning goal for the Pirates on a through ball from McKenzie Hemp in the 83rd minute.
Jenna Morris received a yellow card in the 73rd minute during an aggressive offensive effort that ended up in a collision inside the box.
Whitworth goalkeeper Sienna Tanner (5-4) had two saves. Bailey (3-6-1) had nine saves and gave up two goals for Linfield.
Coming Up: Whitworth will end its four game home stand and start the second half of conference play against Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound next weekend.
