SPOKANE, Wash. – Dominating the top portion of the singles and doubles ladders, Whitworth rolled to a 7-2 win over visiting Pacific Lutheran in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Sunday.
The Pirates improved to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in the NWC after winning for the fifth time in the last six matches. PLU dropped to 2-6, 1-6.
Whitworth won at 1st and 2nd doubles. Taylor Peña and Jennifer Adams topped Carolin Dreher and Samantha Lund 8-3 at #1 while Morgan McDivitt and Bella Hoyos defeated Allison McClure and Megan Beyers 8-2 at #2.
PLU got its doubles point when Emily Bower and Emily Beemsterboer edged Caylee Lamm and Saryn Mooney 8-5 at #3.
Hoyos got the first singles point for Whitworth when she rolled past Lund 6-1, 6-2 at #3. Mooney followed quickly after dispatching McClure 6-0, 6-2 at #2. Then Peña clinched the team victory with her 7-5, 6-1 win over Dreher at #1.
Adams beat Beyers 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 at #4 and McDivitt defeated Bower 6-2, 6-2 at #5.
PLU's only singles point came at #6 where Beemsterboer slipped past Lamm 6-4, 7-6 (4).
The Pirates are now off until their trip to Southern California for spring break.
