Box Score SAN ANTONIO - The Whitworth men's soccer team built a two-goal lead before the University of Redlands rallied to equalize and then net a golden goal during the 96th minute for a 3-2 overtime win in a NCAA Division III tournament first round matchup on Saturday at the campus of Trinity University.

Karl Muelheims put the Pirates ahead in the 13th minute with his 21st goal of the season, taking a through-ball pass from Sam Engle inside the 18-yard box and dribbling around the goalkeeper to score from six yards away. Engle had controlled a loose ball about 30 yards from the goal and quickly found Muelheims with a well-played pass.
Whitworth came close to scoring just before the half during the 40th minute with a series of three shots in a span of six seconds, the third of which hit the crossbar.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead to halftime before Engle doubled the advantage just after the break with an unassisted goal in the 48th minute. The Redlands goalkeeper came off his line to clear a ball but it was kicked to Engle, who chipped a shot from 25 yards out into an open net.
The Bulldogs countered soon after Engle's goal to cut the deficit in half when Jesus Avalos scored with an assist from Casey ChubbFertal in the 55th minute. Avalos scored on a rebound after a header shot from a corner kick had been blocked, firing his shot from just inside a crowded box.
The equalizing goal came in the 61st minute as Kayvon Parsa converted a penalty kick after a foul in the 18-yard box.
Redlands emerged victorious just over halfway into the first overtime period via an own goal. The Bulldogs sent a low crossing pass in front of the goal that was accidentally deflected into the net by a Pirate defender attempting to intercept the pass.
Timmy Costa made several impressive stops and finished the match with a season-high nine saves. Eight of his saves came in the second half and overtime. Josh Haskill collected five saves for Redlands.
Whitworth generated four corner kicks during the first half while holding Redlands without a corner kick. But the Bulldogs took seven corner kicks in the second half and overtime while holding the Pirates without another corner kick after the first half.
Redlands generated 25 shots, including 20 in the second half and overtime, with 12 shots on goal. Whitworth fired 12 shots with seven shots on goal. Engle and Muelheims each put three shots on net for the Pirates.
Redlands became the first team to score three goals against Whitworth during the 2015 season and the first team to earn a come-from-behind win over the Pirates.
"It was a fantastic season," head coach Morgan Cathey said. "It's so sad that it has to end, because I just love these guys and they are such a joy to coach. Everything is about the experience for us. And, I have just had the greatest experience this year. I wish these guys that aren't going to be playing in the program the best of luck in their future endeavors, and I can't wait to see what they are going to achieve the rest of their lives."
Whitworth produced an .868 win percentage in 2015, which is tied for the second-highest win percentage in school history.
