Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 setback for the second consecutive day, this time against the Willamette Bearcats on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
Whitworth fell to 1-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the NWC while Willamette improved to 2-5-0, 1-2-0, in earning its first conference win.
Jill Phillips scored the lone goal of the match in the 62nd minute. She put away a loose ball from close range following a corner kick and scramble in the box, which included a blocked shot by the Pirates before Phillips found the back of the net.
Whitworth outshot Willamette 13-10, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal, but was held scoreless for the second day in a row. Willamette had a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Andrea Stump made two saves for Whitworth while Emily Sewell recorded six saves for the Bearcats.
Whitworth has suffered a series of tough losses this season, as each defeat has been by only one goal and the Pirates are yet to allow more than two goals in a game. Lewis & Clark edged Whitworth on Saturday, also scoring a match-winning goal in the second half.
"Our execution in the attacking third has been not what it should be," head coach Jael Hagerott said. "And I thought this weekend that overall we've done better in generating opportunities. Now it's just (a question of) can we complete them."
Whitworth continues conference play on the road next weekend, traveling to Oregon for a pair of matches at Linfield and Pacific (Ore.).
